Nine years ago, my husband and I were blessed with a beautiful boy. We couldn't wait for the day to arrive when we were able to welcome him into the world. To our surprise, he was ready to come quicker than we expected.

Our son was born at exactly 20 weeks. He weighed in at a remarkable 1lb 6oz. We were excited to hear his first cry especially since I was bed ridden for 6 weeks. Can you imagine your water breaking at 3 1/2 months? Many can't fathom what to expect during that time.

Our faith and perseverance brought us through the situation together. We were hopeful in spite of what may specialists told us. According to each of them he would either be blind, deaf and/or have cerebral palsy. Of course, my husband and I were frightened, but we weren't going to give up on our miracle baby.

Each family is tested by its faith and we were definitely putting our faith in God. After birth he was hospitalized for 4 months and since he's only had one severe scare. Yes, he stopped breathing and I had to administer CPR after having him home for only 2 weeks. It was extremely frightening, but I brought him back to life. The doctors stated if I hadn't reacted as quickly we would have lost him.

Today, he's an active, athletic, charismatic child. He play soccer, basketball and swims. He has received awards in school for being a leader amongst his peers.

Since his birth we have been participating in the March of Dimes walk. The organization was instrumental in his survival during his hospital stay. We are fortunate for the concerned doctors, nurses and loving organization.

He understands that it's equally important to help premature babies be as successful as he is today. Our son is an active participant and enjoys walking with me during the event. It's been 9 years since we've been blessed with our only child and it has been a journey. I can't imagine life without him.

I look forward to walking again next year in April. He will be by my side as usual. When people ask what's his name I reply with a smile. It's Jameel Mikal, which stands for handsome angel.

Where's my Zen?

It's been awhile since I've found my Zen. Women's month is coming to an end and I must say that I am guilty of taking care of others more than myself.

I was recently having a conversation with a very good friend and it got really deep. If your friends can't tell you the truth...then who can? I realized everything she was saying was RIGHT.

I'm a very driven and accomplished person who is always trying to help others.

What about myself? Whatever happened to my spa days?

Lately, I've been working out with weights and running to stay fit. I haven't focused on my Zen.

It's time to substitute a day with Yoga, Spa and relaxation. The key to personal development is learning to take care of yourself, which involves finding and accepting who you are.

In order for me to continue to assist others and allow them to reach their full potential; I have to practice what I preach.

There are many times when I'm exhausted. Yes, I said it. Wow...that felt great! However, I keep going like the energizer bunny.

I have proclaimed today to be the first day of my Zen. I will find time to relax and take care of myself. I truly believe this declaration will allow me see things that I have not otherwise.

My suggestion is for each of you to find your Zen. It's waiting for you to discover and take full advantage.

Silver Lining

Our country has one significant major depression documented in history and multiple recessions. As with anything in life what goes down must come up. This too is true for the stock exchange, finances and hope.

There is something to learn during the great depression term. We read about how families and friends came together to support one another financially, emotionally and spiritually. Their spending habits changed and value was placed in other areas in their lives.

Just as today we should notice that each situation has changed. Today, should be documented as "great" during this recession. Society had become such a plastic society by...buying now, pay later. Priorities had shifted, families were neglected and tangibles were more meaningful than substance.

I can empathize with each person's situation of not making ends meet or knowing when the telephone will ring for employment. However, the time has come to seek out guidance and clarity in your stage.

Where are in you in all facets of your life and how did you get there?

What have you always wanted to do that you didn't have time otherwise? Volunteering is a way to connect with others and fill your spiritual cup by lending your time and hand. Once we all connect with each other the links will strengthen for resistance to breakage.

Your silver lining is shining through with brightness. It's up to you to change your outlook on life and know that "this too shall pass".

During this time, many people are seeking employment opportunity. The resumes are competitive and so are the wages and benefits.

Companies are trying to figure out a way to attract and maintain quality candidates that are going to work efficiently while demonstrating profitability.

Recruit + Retain + Reward = Measurable Success

Recruit Many entities are seeking opportunity in numerous ways such as job searches, recruiters, and college recruitment. It’s also important to get existing employees involved in the search for future employees. Existing personal knows what it takes for the position as well as the qualities the company is looking for. Incorporate a monetary reward for personal to obtain when referring a future candidate. Quality candidates will also consider a position with a sign on bonus, which is indicative of commissions to come.

Retain Retention is a concern for HR and upper management. People want to feel accepted and part of a company in order to stay. No one wants to participate in the mundane cycle of going to work and feeling trapped in a certain position. Performance reviews should implement an action plan that will get each deserving employee to the next level of his/her career. Employers should create a Success Track that will allow both parties to view where they are and how to get to the next level.

Reward Make work life exciting and rewarding. Create a department budget that will allow you to have networking events, milestone & distinction parties and reward celebrations for performance. This small acknowledgement will demonstrate a concern and value for the employees.

Implementing the 3R’s will allow a company to have a measurable success. Start each quarter with a blueprint (plan) that not only allows you to be productive in productivity, but productive in your role.

Having employees that earn rewards and feel appreciative will make for a better and lasting workplace.

My first place

I was watching a show on one of my favorite network stations. It was amazing the emotional rollercoaster new homebuyers were experiencing while searching for the perfect home.

One couple had a list of wants and needs. They had a budget in mind and how much home they were able to afford. They couldn’t live without the granite countertops, four bedrooms, three baths and numerous cosmetics fixtures.

The list of ideas went out the door when they stepped into the first place. It was completely opposite of what they “wished” for, but it looked great.

The emotional purchase of the home was beginning to exude from the souls. Although the real estate agent wasn’t pushy, you could see the joy of a quick sale written all over her face.

Everyone’s action was clearly understandable. The process of purchasing a new home is an emotional rollercoaster.

What have we learned from the previous years in the home market?

First time homebuyers can take advantage of other’s mistakes. Follow the rules of purchasing a home and negotiate your wish list.

Live by the rule of 28/36:

The standard mortgage payment shouldn’t exceed 28% of your monthly gross income. Your total monthly debt shouldn’t exceed 36%.

Since consumers were being thrown credit and debt from in many directions, those numbers have far exceeded the recommended percentage of gross monthly income. In today’s numbers many household debt to income ratio is approaching 80% plus.

Mismanagement of money and approval of credit has allowed for loan modification for existing homeowners. The loan medication plan will allow you to (temporarily) reduce your mortgage payment to 31%. This will give you the opportunity to get your debt under control.

Other ways to get your household finances under control are to:

Control your spending habits.
Find a second job to rapidly pay toward debt.
Turn a hobby into an income.
Negotiate credit balances with lenders.

Does your financial future look bleak or bright in 2010?

It’s the New Year and the water cooler conversations are immersed with old and new resolutions. We are all guilty of promising to lose weight, get out of debt, save more and treat others better.

Resolutions are wills of determinations. I’m not indicating that anyone has false intentions about their success. I am implying that the implementation of resolutions takes more than just a statement.

Resolutions are only successful with a plan. The thoughts, behavior and actions must completely change.

When your ultimate goal is to get out of debt by the end of 2010 and you charge those “to die for” stilettos on January 2, you’re not following through with your resolution.
In order to change from the malicious cycle that you’ve created, you must first change your behavior.

Let’s repeat….

I WILL pay off my debt and start to invest in a savings plan.

I will PAY OFF my debt and start to invest in a savings plan.

I will pay off my debt and start to INVEST in a savings plan.

The more you repeat and remind yourself daily. The more successful you will be.

1. Cut up the credit cards.
2. Create a plan and stick to it as to how to pay off the debt.
3. Open and direct deposit a comfortable amt of $$ into an acct to pay self first.

Believe me; I have come across many people wondering how they are going to purchase bread and milk. Therefore, a savings plan is what you are comfortable with not what others are doing.

One dollar a day is $365 dollars you didn’t have the previous year. Again, it’s whatever you can afford.

The year is still new. For those who haven’t done so create a monthly strategy as to how you are going to be successful. Make sure the plan is feasible and won’t deter you from giving up. Remember, your situation didn’t happen overnight and it won’t correct itself overnight.

With each milestone, reward yourself with a SMALL token. You are then creating a positive reinforcement for yourself.

Jennifer has come to a point in her life that she can’t suffer any longer. She
admits her debt excluding mortgage comes to $300,000.00. Her credit cards used from purchasing food to exotic trips to Africa and Europe .

Jennifer clearly has a problem with debt. Her dilemma with finances and having a sense to want to belong started as far back as her teen years. I asked Jennifer as far back she could remember to describe an incident trying to keep up with someone outside her means. She smiled and stated, “high school”. High school is a time when most of us are confused about where we should belong. There are groups from popular, jocks, nerds, outcasts, etc. Jennifer wanted to be a popular girl, but didn’t initially look the part. She recalls begging her parents to shop at the designer stores and paying for spring break trips.

I decided to have Jennifer start with taking care of herself, realizing who she truly is, accept it, and then tackle her debt. She was hesitant because she presented a façade for so long. Everyone who knew her categorized her as the “it” girl. No one realized the pain and loneliness she had. Jennifer let the materials define who she was when in fact she was a carefree woman with goals and ambitions. Her goal was to actually love herself and enjoy life as well as defining her level of success. While having the discussion with me she admittedly cried about dying with debt and having nothing worthwhile to show for all her hard work.

Steps needing to take in order to address the issues:
1. Admit to identifying one based on others’ perception.
2. Define who you are and embrace it.
3. Identify all your debt to begin elimination.
4. Start eliminating the high interest credit cards first.
5. Decide what could be eliminated from a daily routine and put the cash away in an emergency fund.

Do you really need to file bankruptcy to financially stay afloat?

Middle class is increasingly filing bankruptcy. For some the American Dream has ended. Couples are confused about their wrong turns.

Many people are sitting at the dinner table covered with bills that have past due notices stamp from front to back. There is a hesitation of answering the phone every time it rings. The oblivious factor kicks in when the bills are due.

We have been programmed that the American dream consists of buying the best education and home. I am not dismissing furthering your education.

I too have indulged in higher education and have become a homeowner. However, it was with great planning and sacrifice.

It’s time to look at oneself and ask the pertinent questions.

1. Do I live to satisfy others?
2. What does financial success mean to me?
3. How am I defining my standards?
4. What is my financial plan?

For those of you who have filed bankruptcy you have a ‘fresh’ slate. The key to your success going forward are to watch the spending triggers and not fall victim to overloading credit.

It’s important not to live beyond your means. Your means consists of your net pay minus savings contribution, health care and supplemental retirement.

Think about your last credit card purchase. Was it truly need or wanted? Why did you have to splurge on the item? Was it to make you look or feel good?

** To survive within your means there are essentials for finances are linked to emotions:

1. Set a budget.
2. Set goals.
3. Identify spending triggers
4. Surround self with supporters
5. Educate about finances
6. Set boundaries
7. Love self

Implementing these steps is imperative to living within your means and establishing wealth for yourself. Remember, anyone is capable of getting out of debt. It’s identifying the cause that is affecting the continuous behavior. Before acknowledging, the fundamental steps to living within a budget address the debt. It is essential to know where you stand in your financial dilemma. Be aware of your total balances, payments and rates.

Overwhelmed and out of budget for Thanksgiving

We all knew this day was coming. It’s destined to happen every year. The family gathers around to give thanks for what they have received during the year and acknowledge the love within the room.

The family gathering increases yearly due to the additions to the family from small children, in-laws and pets. Everyone looks forward to visiting your household because you are familiar with the etiquette of hosting and serving.

What you didn’t predict was the economy taking a toll on your holiday budget.

What are you going to do now? Your heart is filled with emotions of disappointment. You can’t supply the banquet spread you have done yearly. Your guests and family won’t understand the stress your household has taken from limited funds.

Since everyone enjoys your hospitality there’s no reason for you to discontinue with tradition. Invite your guests and family as you normally do, but ask for assistance.

Everyone is aware of the financial stress each person has taken, why should you be any different.

1. Establish a complete potluck meal.

2. Create a list of items you want served for the Thanksgiving feast.

3. Delegate the responsibilities to others to make a successful and thankful holiday.

4. Establish a time for arrival so that dinner is served in a timely fashion.

To continue with an upbeat ambiance create a prepared menu that list each item from appetizer to desert placed strategically in front of each guest seat. This small detail will make you feel great about putting your final additions on the dinner.

Many times women feel the weight on their shoulders by trying to be every woman to each person. It’s perfectly fine to ask for assistance when needed. This is a time to feel elated about life, your accomplishments, blessings and family.

Remember, family and guests are visiting your household for a sense of comfort and love. I’m sure bringing a dish this year won’t be a problem and it will demonstrate the appreciation from the prior moments.

Consumers are looking for a deal of a lifetime for the holidays

Herey! Herey! Black Friday has arrived early. Retailers are targeting consumers to patronize their stores.

Big savings are here to ease the pockets of the consumers and add profit for the retail stores. Kmart, Walmart, Target, Marshalls, TJ Maxx has started 'Black Friday' early in hopes to attract the bargain finders and improve year over year production. The elite bargain finders have noticed the drop in prices and in-store coupons offered for additional savings.

I know that in order for the economy to move forward consumers have to put money into the system. For many months we have been hearing to save, save, save. Although this concept we allow you to address the dark, bleak moments we also have to [conservatively] spend.

Now is the time to cash in the holiday savings account and spend the gift cards.

During the month of October the econmists noticed a slight increase in retail sales. This is due to strategic planning of offering holiday prices early and the outburst of the various government programs.

However, as an avid consumer and management consultant I don't see too many households cashing in the piggy bank anytime soon. The economic turmoil is teaching us to spend money on what is needed and not wanted.

Let's keep in mind that the season is for giving Thanks and showing endless gratitude toward other's efforts to make people feel loved and appreciated. In return your gesture will not only go a long way, but assist you in learning that giving thanks doesn't always mean over spending to make yourself look good.

To find the deal of a lifetime one must consider:

1. Visiting online coupon sites for add'l savings

2. Use in-store coupons

3. Create a list before shopping

4. Spend within your 'holiday' budget

I would also suggest waiting for the last minute to purchase your high ticket items.

I know you don't want to fight the crowd and stand in the endless line to become frustrated with the next consumer who has questions and coupons for days. In the end, it's worth it.

Retailers are in desperate need to move the merchandise from the shelves and increase production. Make sure the urgency works in your favor. Again, wait until the last minute and negotiate your price.

We can all take a segment from...Let's Make a Deal. Believe me, stores would rather see a happy customer than dusty merchandise.

Why do I live paycheck to paycheck to feel good about myself?

This is an excerpt from the book, Finances are Linked to Emotions written by Bahiyah Shabazz.

I have discovered that too many of us are driven by our emotions. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it can lead to discomfort. Emotions are intense feelings that coerce a decision from individuals. To a person’s surprise, the outcome may not deliver the results expected from the intentions. Couples question their marriage, individuals wonder about well-being.

In order to address any underlying issues we must discuss what leads a person to spend out of control and live for others. Let’s look at Chloe. I’m sure everyone knows a “Chloe”. This person only cares about how she looks no matter the situation. Everyone isn’t this extreme, but the circumstance is familiar. I have spoken with numerous people valuing themselves by the designer material items owned so that they can portray to others a well presented person. “Treating yourself” as people like to call it should not only imply splurging on clothing. It should consist of putting money away for an emergency fund, a rainy day or retirement.

Once we accept the importance of self we can understand “treating yourself” can also mean taking care of you. As always, people ask the mind puzzling questions about reasons for actions.

Actions taken to improve:

1. Realize and accept yourself

2. Define standards by your own definition

3. Treat yourself by opening a savings acct & save 10%

4. Pay bills then live on disposable income

Layaway is the old, 'New'

I remember as a child going to the department store and watching my parents load up the shopping cart. My eyes would filled with excitement from all the merchandise. After endless hours of shopping we would stand in line.

I noticed my mother placing all the merchandise onto the counter, watching each item strategically place inside a box. She then would exchange a small, manageable dollar amount in exchange for a receipt.

Over the next few weeks we would visit the store only to make payments toward the merchandise.

During this economic time families are trying to figure out how to celebrate holidays, milestones and events without severely decreasing their disposable income and tapping their credit cards.

While you're trying to decide what to purchase for the holidays and how you're going to afford it. I encourage you to look into layaway. It was good enough for our parents and grandparents, it should be good enough for us.

Our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles took advantage of the luxury decades ago. It was an act of convenience and a way to save and not charge enormous debt onto a credit card.

Eventually, department stores discontinued layaway and used the excuse of losing money due to returned items and lack of payments toward layaway.

Today, it's a different outlook on the system. Stores such as Kmart, Burlington Coat Factory, Sears, Marshall's, T.J. Max and select Best Buys have had a change of heart.

The stores have realized that in order to notice an increase in sales and production something is going to have to change. The change is...layaway.

Consumers weren't the only ones to benefit from 'Cash for Clunkers'

I remember my first car was a used Navy Blue 5.0 Ford Mustang. It had all the bells and whistles including the clutch that would go out and the engine would run hot. Yeah those were the days!

I had to insert a flat head screwdriver inside a flap on "some gadget" underneath the hood for it to start. I suppose the engine needed air. As I digress, I loved that vehicle. In the end, the repairs were more than I paid for the used vehicle.

There was a time when Ford was an acronym for fix on, repair daily or found on road dead.

Since the collapse of GM and Chrysler consumers are turning to a familiar face once again...Ford.

Ford truly benefited from the 'Cash for Clunkers' program. There profit was nearly $1B. Can you believe it? Can the company keep the momentum and market the brand as reliable and stable?

Only time will tell!

Now that the celebration and final numbers for the 'Cash for Clunkers' program has been validated let's move on to the increase in the gas prices. Yes, readers the gas prices have been increasing over the past 18 days and counting.

Now that the consumers have purchased their high profile gas efficient vehicles are they too feeling the pressure at the pump.

The clunker vehicle was not pleasing to the eye for some, but the note was paid and there (possibly) were minimum concerns. Now that the consumer has a car note, increase car insurance and the rise of gas prices. Was it worth it? Did the program benefit you, the entities or both?

At the end of the day it seems everyone benefited from the 'Cash for Clunkers' program:

Consumer= Feels good when driving a new vehicle
Government= Temporary solution to a semi-permanent financial turmoil
Oil Company= Increase in gas prices for more profit
Car Insurance=Increase in coverage and more money toward the agency
Citizens (some)=Celebrating the efforts of The Obama Administration

The government has found a way for everyone to profit and be satisfied. The program was a bandage on a crack dam that's seeping uncontrollable water.

The recent recession has made homeownership a buyer's market, but that doesn't mean you have to indulge

I was recently asked by someone should she sell her home to purchase another. I couldn't intelligently answer that question without pertinent information. She is currently a homeowner and was aware that this stage of the economy is a buyer's market.

She wanted me to give her a yes or no answer to put her home on the market to purchase a house in a more affluent area. You have to ask yourself if this is an irrational or rational purchase.

We have learned that many unsuccessful purchases have been through emotional spending.

I didn't have time to adequately speak with her because it was in passing, but I have to know if she needed to move. I did learn that she is a nurse with grown children. However, she wanted to purchase a four bedroom/three bath home. Why?

This is the time when most people are downsizing.

Although she will potentially purchase a home, she too is a seller.

There are many things to consider when selling your home.

Do you have equity?

Do you have an upside down value?

Do you have 1 or 2 mortgages?

Are there major repairs to consider?

Why do you want to sell?

Is your home marketable?

Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to speak with her, but I would love to hear more about her spending behavior and self reliance.

It's important to consider your total liability. In her case, if she is fortunate to sell her home to upgrade to a larger domicile; it's probably wise to look into and possibly increase her retirement nest for more security.

Don't be overly excited about "a buyer's market" when you too are a seller. Seek guidance in your decision and ask relevant questions to yourself as to why you want to make a large purchase.

In order to move on financially it's important to break your cycle of reckless behavior.

Trick or Treat: Are your splurging treats putting you into a financial trick bag?

We've all had the experience of walking pass that one irresistible item screaming our name. You think to yourself one more [small] purchase on the credit card won't hurt anything, including your financial status.

Purchasing on impulse may allow you to look good for the moment, but leave you feeling bad for a long time.

Credit card minimum payments have increased. When you continue to purchase items on your credit card not only are you increasing your balance vs limit, but you are increasing your monthly financial obligations.

It's never too late to revisit your behavior and spending habits to get out of a financial dilemma.

Make a list and check it twice. Your list is the difference between naughty and nice. When you make a list and stick to the items, it allows you to remain in control of your finances.

Leave the plastic at home. I'm a firm believer in building your credit, however, too much credit can deter you from that ideal credit score. Pay with cash to avoid over spending. When you only spend cash it allows you to reconsider that splurging, impulse item. Creditors regard your debt to income and balance to limit on credit cards. In this case, less is more.

A financial checkup keeps money thriving. Create a household financial plan and continue with monthly follow ups. The prudent consumer tracks her spending and controls her finances. When you revisit the plan it's perfectly fine to make changes for improvement.

The next time you feel the impulse item will make a difference in your life...it will.

Money Mondays

Tipping Etiquette

Most of us know that Saturday was Sweetest Day. All the years we (hubby and I) have been together we have never celebrated the Hallmark induced holiday. I am not against anyone whom wants to use the day to show his/her significant other how much the world revolves around that person.

I believe that everyday is a celebration and gifts, chocolate and flowers are more meaningful when they are purchased 'just because' not because someone told you to.

I digress...back to the point.

Our son, who is 8 yo uses any moment to celebrate, go to the movies and out to dinner. For the sake of not breaking his heart we did. So hubby, son and I made a date out of the day.

We get to dinner and the service was mediocre. We are in love with Mexican food and would eat it daily if my husband didn't complain about variety. It's now time to pay the bill and tip.

Do I tip on service?

Do I tip my standard?

Do I tip the recommended 10-15 percent?

I know we are all working because we have to, not because we want to. So I take that into consideration and tip her the lowest possible...10 percent.

Do you feel obligated to tip? To tip someone is a social gratification of service, not a social obligation. Understand that tip demonstrates the appreciation of the service received. I'm a firm believer that a person receives what he/she deserves and nothing more.

Tips should be earned just as anything else in this world.

Standard tips:

10-15 percent for restaurants
5 percent for hair and spa salons
while vacationing (seek what the standard is for the area)
10 percent for valet

Remember a tip is just like a bonus. If you don't do the work you won't receive the payment. Never expect for someone to reward you for lack of service.

Increase Customer Base

I've said it over and over again. People base their actions on emotions. Think about a time when you were shopping and intended to pick up a few items, but left the store with more bags than imagined.

Customers purchase spontaneous items because it makes them feel good about themselves. This occurs once they enter the store. What gets the customers to initially visit the store?

An increase in customer visitation is based on three things:

1. Product

What do you have to offer your consumers? Is the bang worth the buck? During this economic time people are looking for ways to stretch the dollar. You want to research to make sure there is a demand for the supply you have. The [one of] worst thing you can do is to allow a product to sit on your shelves accumulating dust.

2. Service

Please! Please! Please! Understand that the consumer comes first. I am not saying they are always right, but there are ways to handle each situation. Implement a measurable leadership program in the workplace to make sure your consumers are receiving the best service possible.

3. Brand

How do you stand out from the rest? Find your niche in the market that will continue to attract and retain consumers. McDonalds, Home Depot, Essence, Forbes, Oprah and many others have learned this concept. Once you earn the trust of your consumers, you will forever have an 'audience' to sell your products to.

There was a consumer who went into a business to purchase a product. She had concerns and approached the manager. The manager did not like her questions and concerns and began to act inappropriately. He clearly lost the business of this consumer and many others. I learned about her situation through 'word of mouth', which can spread like wildfire. This is a prime example of the three previous goals that must be considered in order to expand your business. Apparently the product was not up to par, the service was inadequate and now the brand will be flawed due to lack of consistent monitoring and consideration of [product, service, brand] the consumers' needs.

Wizard of Oz Syndrome

Wishing your finances away isn't going to change your financial state. After speaking with countless clients two phrases continue to peak it's ugly little head.

#1 Procrastinate

#2 Lack of planning

Don't confuse your environment with the Wizard of Oz. The ruby red slippers or BCBG heels will not allow you to click your problems away and vanish from the situation. In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy was confused because she was in unfamiliar surroundings. Instead of following her own instinct she listened to others for help. Seeking out the Wizard allowed her to build confidence (so she thought) . In the end, she found that it was her own self reliance that got her back home.

The Wizard of Oz syndrome means that people are seeking guidance without using their knowledge to answer all questions. I'm not saying that you don't need assistance every now and again. I'm saying that all you have to do is to establish a plan and have a sense of urgency about your life. Each behavior transition into every facet of your life.

As I turn on the news and read the paper, I hear individuals say that it (financial crisis) will come to an end. When? How?

Question:When are you going to get out of debt?

Answer: I don't want to be in debt and I will start saving tomorrow. The market is too bad right now. I'm scared.

Question: How are you going to get out of debt?

Answer: Once again, I will pay off all my bills.

These aren't adequate answers.

Eliminate Procrastination. "Why put off tomorrow what you can do today"? Everyone knows that tomorrow never comes. In the end, we have watched time go by and we are in the same dilemma or worse. Begin fixing your situation today. Start with addressing how you got into this financial turmoil. Identify your behavior that contributes to the spending and lack of budgeting. Realize and accept that you can only change yourself. It starts at HOME.
Set a plan. This addresses lack of planning. Answer the following questions in your plan. When do I want to be out of debt? How long will it take me? How much debt do I have? How do I feel about myself and the debt I've accumulated? How much can I contribute towards my debt? There are many questions to implement in the plan. You along with a consultant will be able to put a strong, reliable, accomplished plan together.

Be the Wizard in you goals. Clicking your designer shoes, which got you into the situation is not the way to eradicate your debt.

It's a simple question, but everyone doesn't know the answer.

Think about your life...

What does it represent?

What would you like to portray to others?

How can you get there?

The answer to the main question, including the others are obtainable with confidence and a plan of action.

1.List what your goals are. Having a visual will remind you of what you want to accomplish. Many times people state what they want out of life without a constant reminder of what it truly is. List the long term goals first, then break down with short term. You would be amazed at how quickly you reach the long term goal when the short ones are obtained. This is truly a sense of accomplishment.

2. Deliver with confidence. There is nothing worse than someone demanding a task in a timid tone. Everything about you should represent confidence (walk, attire, attitude and tone). Accept nothing less than what you want with assertive demand of desires.

3. Have an action plan. Goals are great, confidence is even better, an action plan is the icing on the cake. You have to know where you've been before you know where you're going. Details! Details! Details! This leads back to the original question: What do you want? Even if you CAN answer the question, you want to have a plan as to how to get there. Otherwise, you are all over the place with no direction traveling in undeliverable circles.

At the end of the day you feel a sense of accomplishment with no stone unturned. As a person with a full plate you want to make sure every minute counts. With these strategies it surely will.

Weddings are occurring throughout the year. Many would be amazed at the amount of fall weddings there are. Maybe it's the colorful leaves that have meaning.

It's has been the talk of Tinseltown and every community on earth. Yes, Khloe and Lamar Odom is now husband and wife. They wed yesterday after a whirl wind 30-day courtship. Love is blind, but it should also be cautious. Lamar made one of the biggest mistakes most celebrities conduct.

THERE'S NO PRENUP!!! Isn't this one of the reasons celebrities file bankruptcy after divorce?

It seems Ryan Seacrest Production paid for the lavish $1 MM dollar ceremony and will view on the "hit" reality show. There wasn't enough time to gather a prenup and sign. Come on people what's the rush?!

Although the couple didn't pay for the wedding, I want to discuss wedding strategies to have the most memorable day of your life without worrying about the days after.

Marriage along with financial freedom is deeply rooted. In order for you to add to a relationship you must be willing to share yourself, beliefs and finances. One must know and appreciate him/herself before committing to anything.

We are beings with emotional attachments.

Understand your self worth-Realizing and understanding who you truly are is complimentary to a relationship. A marriage is a unity between two people coming together to grow spiritually. In order to have a successful marriage you have to know your own value and not depend on someone else to define you.
Agree with the dynamics of the relationship- There are many people who believe once they say 'I Do' life will miraculously change. NO...you have to have a discussion beforehand to establish your expectations of the other party.
Set a budget for your memorable day- We all want it. The doves released from the cage, 5-tier wedding cake, a train that trails 3 miles long, a large wedding party and invites from everyone known from elementary until now. The marriage is more important than the wedding. Establish a budget between the two of you. Ask different businesses to sponsor your cake, invitations, wedding gown and tuxedos in exchange for free advertisement and publicity.
Arrange a wishing well reception- The money earned from the wishing well reception will allow you to put toward the wedding and possibly a down payment on the house.
Ask boss for bonus- When you are an exceptional employee you receive exceptional gifts. Instead of the tea kettle you were eyeing, ask your company to sponsor your honeymoon. This can be a great retention package for others knowing that gifts of this magnitude are feasible.

There are many couples that book both wedding and reception at the same venue. This cuts the cost and the guests aren't wondering where to go next. Everything is in one spot and less stressful.

Weddings are beautiful and stressful enough without worrying about the financial details.

I recently watched the first episode of: Eddie Griffin's Going for Broke. It confirmed all my discussions about celebrities (or anyone w/ money) taking care of everyone they know.

Apparently, he is disbursing more money than he's receiving yearly. The solution to the problem is quite simple. Engage in the principles for Financial Freedom.

Number #6 Principle: Set Boundaries

The boundaries are set with you when a budget is established. However, this particular boundary is recognized for others who plead for monies and request for loans.

As I have coached clients in the past to look into the mirror and practice saying, “No”! Recently, a mother came into the office distressed the nearly six figure savings has depleted to less than $3000.00. She hadn’t realized that she was spending that much money on others. She disclosed her only son who is an engineer lost his job. He is married with two children. The wife is a homemaker who has no desire to change her job title. I encouraged her to cut the cord and persuade him to find employment any if it involved relocating. She is the typical parent who put others’ needs before hers. It’s time to say No or you’ll financially spiral downward.

It's time for Eddie Griffin and others to listen to an expert consultant to find and implement empowerment of self and finances. It's perfectly fine to tell others "NO" because you have to be the one to learn to take care of yourself.

This is not a selfish act. In fact, it's an act of love for thyself.

Fundamentals of business financial is needed to keep track and be productive

Financial accounting is measuring and recording business transactions and providing financial statements and providing financial statements that are based on generally accepted accounting principles. It focuses on external reporting. The object of financial accounting is to assist accountants in their stewardship function: the safeguarding of the organization’s assets. The central outputs of financial accounting are audited financial statements such as balance sheets and income statements. Financial accounting is oriented toward providing information to individuals outside the firm, e.g., prospective shareholders.

By contrast, managerial accounting measures and reports financial and no financial information that helps make decisions to fulfill the goals of an organization. It focuses on internal reporting. The tools used by managerial accountants to achieve their goal of decision support are such things as budgets; activity based costing and financial planning. Managerial accounting is designed for internal use by a firm’s managers.

Neither financial nor managerial accounting is a subset of the other. They each have a distinct purpose and audience. Financial accounting reports are meant to give capital providers a means of assessing how well that capital has been used. As such, they are backward looking, based of historical accounting data and designed to provide a broad assessment of organizational performance. In the private sector, generally accepted accounting principles have been developed and are required to ensure consistency in reporting across organizations.

By contrast, managerial accounting, with its focus on decision support, is forward looking. Given the dynamic and idiosyncratic needs of its audience of operational managers, there are no standard rules in managerial accounting. But many tools have been developed that have proved useful in decision support, such as activity based costing and capital budgeting.

Costing is another major area of difference between financial and managerial accounting. Accurate costing all the way down to the product, unit, service, or activity level is a prerequisite for effective decision making and efficient resource allocation. But in aggregate financial reporting, only the totality of expenses is needed to calculate net income and so accuracy at the product or activity level is irrelevant: After costs have been incurred, the totals remain the same, however costs are allocated.

Most organizations need to have both an internal and an external focus and so must pay attention to the adequacy of both their financial and managerial accounting systems. However, often demands of external capital providers speak louder than the needs of internal managers, a phenomenon exacerbated by the concentration of the training most accountants have in financial accounting over managerial accounting.

Establishing the difference between financial and managerial accounting will give accountants a competitive advantage for a company.

It's time to define and focus on the necessary areas, which cause improvement in systems. Prepare yourself for next year to make it rewarding to your employees, stockholders and self.

I can spend hours on this topic, but I will spare you the horror. I recently signed a woman, separated, with children for financial management consultation.

Mrs. X, as I will call her for privacy purposes, has a similar story as most women.

Women are behavioral money handlers!!!!!

I know many would like to disagree, but I have to give a few examples:

loaning money when you can't make ends meet
not researching the payoff balance of installment loans for fear of spending extra
money in pocketbook means you can purchase that special item
going far & beyond to splurge on memorable family vacations
receiving a lump sum and not knowing where the money went

You may think that anyone is capable of engaging in these particular behaviors. You're right! However, SMG have surveyed that more women are powerless when it comes to money because of the emotional state.

This is the time Mrs. X gather her assets and liabilities for comparison. Unfortunately, she doesn't have any idea how much she pays monthly on expenses. She has informed me that she receives a certain amount for groceries, yet she continues eat out daily.

When you grasp the behavioral aspect of your finances it transitions throughout your life. I've coached her to stop eating out. This will save her $360 mthly on take out, which will be applied toward other debt. She can now spend more time in the kitchen and teach her children how to properly prepare a meal and control portions.

Mrs. X also wants to lose weight. I believe this particular action will address both concerns.

Many can see yourselves in Mrs. X. Start today by listing your 'shopping sprees' and what emotions you felt before purchasing the items. You will see a pattern and correlation with your emotions.

Once you address your behavior and realize your financial potential; you will accomplish your financial goals.

First day of school

Today was the 1st day of school and I couldn't help but notice how big my son is getting. He's making important decisions for himself.

* What to eat for breakfast
* Which clothes and shoes to wear
* Which materials to put inside his backpack
* What to take for lunch

I don't think he needs me and he's only eight. He was more prepared for the 1st day of school than I was. I must say that this year I strategically shopped for clothes and shoes, but I didn't buy any school supplies.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen. You heard me. My son spend the first day of school without new school supplies. In addition, I didn't let him wear any new clothes.

I know...bad mommy.

Let's go back to the school supplies. Each year I grab the list at Walmart and Office Depot and purchase each item that's grade appropriate. Upon the first day of school I realize that his teacher has created her own list.

See. Now I have to return to the store and purchase the items from her list. Since I try to be extremely prepared I purchase the original items so far in advance that I "lose" the receipt. I can't return or exchange the items.

Do you see my dilemma? I am throwing money away.

My son didn't mind not wearing any new outfits today. He was actually happy. Once everyone else "new clothes" wear out he can then present himself like a shining star.

The morale of the story is mom learned a valuable lesson. I will continue to wait until the 1st day of school to go shopping supplies.

I didn't realize how quickly the summer flew by. Next week my son is starting the third grade. He's very excited, but concerned about squeezing in our last summer family vacation. I decided to compare deals between Wisconsin Dells and Key Lime Cove.

During this entire process I involved my son. We looked at the activities, lodging, and food. He was able to compare apples to apples and not dwell on his emotions.

He was overwhelmed with Wisconsin Dells because of the numerous waterparks. He later learned that you have to pay for each individual park. Of course the cost of fun was slowly adding up as he expressed disappointment.

As parents, it is our responsibility to teach our children the fundamentals of life. We discuss various subjects in the school curriculum including math. However, we don't go one step further to explain how to budget, address behavioral habits of shopping and compare prices.

He was able to make a decision as I agreed with Key Lime Cove. The hotel room is great and has all the amenities we want. The price also includes passes to the waterpark. Everything is inside the resort and we don't have to walk throughout the attractions to find restaurants to appease out taste buds.

The family is looking forward to spending time at the waterpark resort. More importantly, our son feels involved in making the decision during the entire process.

In order for your children to be financially responsible it must start at home.

Unemployment rate is down, stock market is up!!

Over the weekend I read about the unemployment rates. I am pleased to announce that it has dropped from 9.5% to 9.4%. This shows a transition in the right direction.

The stock market is up. You may wonder how is this so because people and families are borrowing and lending less.

Simple!! You are NOW purchasing what you need, not want.

Stocks are equities, which are companies that you know and love and sometimes don't. Consumers are "investing" in items that are familiar to them and household. Thereby, an increase in the stock market.

It will take a few more months to actually see if there is definitely a positive impact on the economy and we are trending in the right direction.

Another great observation about recent unemployment is that more people are fulfilling their passion and working in fields they love. Many are finding or creating a niche for themselves.

This is the attitude I love to see. Not the the attitude of making excuses.

Realize that this small tenth of a percentage represent over 200,000 jobs. That's phenomenon!

Clipping Coupons

I previously mentioned that I have a friend who is consumed with coupons. I'm not oppose to coupons, but she takes it to another level. She follows a you tube subscriber that demonstrates how to "properly" cut the coupons and coordinate in a colorful binder.

It wasn't until she informed me that she saved $45 on an $85 bill. Okay, my interest has completely peaked. I later asked her what is she doing with all the money she's saving from the coupons.

NOTHING!!!

She's just happy to not have to spend the money.

My suggestion is to really notice the difference you're saving. Deposit the amount saved on each receipt into a savings account. You will definitely notice the money accumulating from your efforts. The purchase value of the dollar will possible be 2% this year as oppose to 3%. I'm ambivalent about this percentage for two reasons:

1. The value of a dollar isn't in much demand as before (negative)
2. The lower interest rate offered on accts will keep you up w/ inflation (positive)

I am now conscious of the coupons and depositing the money saved in my acct. I have noticed a difference in my savings balance.

Another savings tip that will increase the value in your household.

Where was this program when I needed it?

A year and half ago someone hit my precious vehicle.

I bonded nearly 9 years with this car. We had many stories to tell. The car was well kept and I performed all the maintenance on time.

To my dismay, someone drove down my Cul de Sac to put a huge dent in the driver door. This dent didn't allow me to operate the window or properly close the door. After driving around for several weeks and hearing the suggestions from employees and husband. I decided to purchase another vehicle.

I drove into the dealership to make a trade. Unbeknownst to them I was going to get another vehicle regardless of what they had to say. Unfortunately, what they had to say was insulting.

I was offered $700 for my car! What?

I decided to sell the car direct and received nearly $2000. I was pleased for the knowledge and ability to sell the car myself.

I wish they had the clunkers plan last year. I would have received more than $2000 to apply toward the principal balance. However, I did drive off the lot with a great SUV that I saved thousands because no one wanted a "gas guzzler" at the time due to the gas price.

Now that the gas price is reasonable I have come out on top.

Take advantage of the clunker plan if you are considering purchasing another vehicle and you have it in your budget. Make sure to take a close look at your potential buy to compare MPG and value.

Another week of Money Monday

Lately, I've been hearing more and more about celebrities filing bankruptcy. What is it?

This goes to show everyone that a person with millions too can mismanage funds. We seem to think that having more money is the answer to our daily problems. When on the other hand it quite the opposite.

Let's face it!! A person who has the world in his or her hands can easily find himself into debt. This can happen for several reasons:

1. wanting to buy friends & family gifts
2. wanting to save the neighborhood from financial distress
3. purchasing big ticket items ( cars, houses, jewelry)
4. spending every monthly gratuity earned
5. not saving

When you research the celebrities filing bankruptcy the list is never ending. I have a few suggestions to protect your prestigious income.

1. Consult with a trusted advisor
2. Only purchase what is necessary
3. Live on 80% of monthly gratuity
4. Don't try to financially save family & friends
5. Establish a prenup when considering marriage
6. Save & invest

Please stop putting your income and life savings into jewelry "bling bling", clothes, shoes and meaningless items. I find it amusing when watching MTV Cribs the amount of celebrities who purchase items just for bragging rights. These include Plasma flat screen TVs in each room, gold toilets, granite throughout the house.

I too enjoy the finer things in life, but within reason.

Remember, you can easily be the 'secret millionaire next door' and live life to its fullest. You aren't defined by your material items. However, you are remembered by your management of money.

Enough is enough

When do you say enough is enough?

Is it when...

you can't make ends meet
you're filing for bankruptcy
your spouse is leaving you for money mismanagement
you can't accomplish any goals
you've given up on yourself

The only person that will ever be invited to your pity party is YOU. I had to personally find that out for myself. Every now and again I like to share a personal story.

One day I was in my bedroom feeling sorry for myself. I was crying and sobbing everything that was wrong with my life. I had the list of complaints on hand. I didn't believe in myself or what was to come.

The cake and ice cream was present. The party favors were present. The speech was prepared. There was only one problem. I was the only one invited to the party. It seemed no one wanted to join me at the pity party. Only I believed I was in an emotional crisis. Everyone around me, especially hubby, wanted me to get over it.

My husband is known for his abrasive personality and I couldn't believe he wasn't going to attend. I would attend his...if he had one. Even my son couldn't understand my turmoil. After noticing no one would show. I cleaned my face, ripped up the speech and gathered my emotions.

See others saw what I couldn't at the time. That was to appreciate what I had because someone else was worse than I was. Today it's a much different story. Although I like to party, you won't find me at another pity party.

I had enough of giving up on myself. I always wanted to be successful...now I am.

I don't think so...

I recently had a conversation with a lady who wanted to discuss life insurance.

"What's the appropriate amount?" she reluctantly asked.

That depends on whether or not you have a spouse (w/ or w/o income), dependents, liabilities and potential college fund(s).

The lady looked confused as she yelled, "I just want to bury myself, I don't want to support my husband's mistress".

WOW!!!!

That conversation was for an entirely different topic. I don't want anyone to be confused about the amount of insurance you may need.

No! It's not for your beneficiary to get rich.
No! It's not suppose to cost an arm & leg.
No! You don't get it to provide for the mistress.

When you consider life insurance you must consider your spouse and dependent(s) you are leaving behind. The policy is available to pay for the burial, pay off the mortgage, liabilities and continue with college plans for your children.

Regard your policy as a comfort so that your loved one will have one less thing to be concerned with as he/she is grieving.

There can be too much insurance. Again, it's not for your beneficiary to become rich. I highly encourage everyone to sit down with a consultant to discuss all the pertinent information.

At the end of the day you want to make sure your family isn't grieving over your death and lack of income.

There's just no convincing some people. She steadfast and only wanted the bare minimum after researching different funeral homes. The lady said if her husband had to he will get two jobs to support the family. Once she's gone it's no longer her concern.

Acknowledgement of Self

It has been a while since my last post. I have been bombarded with friends, family and business. Although I am not complaining because I was surrounded by love, comfort and compassion. This past week allowed me to discover more about myself.

Acknowledgement of self is important when you are sharing what you have to offer to others.

We began by sharing our home, food and everything in between. I continuously heard from all 20+ guests (at one moment) the comfort of home. It truly put a smile on my face because that is what I am always going for.

I want people to capture the love we have for ourselves and each other when they grace our home. Each dish is made with love and you can enjoy every ingredient. When you put your best foot forward in whatever you do, people acknowledge your efforts.

I have discovered and acknowledged about self:

2. dedication
3. drive
4. sharing
5. acceptance

Once I began to truly acknowledge those features about myself, I enjoy life and everything it brings into my direction.

With this new found comfort I am positive that more Blessings will come my way.

As we all celebrate this country's Declaration of Independence. Let's not neglect our personal independent goals.

To have Independence means to:

take care of yourself
manage your finances
support your household
establish a nest egg/retirement savings

According to the American dictionary independence is 1. The state of quality of being independent. 2. Sufficient income for comfortable self support, a competence.

Let us celebrate this weekend with competence and consideration for self and finances. Budget this weekend as your disposable income is contingent of the 4Th.

Family is extremely important. Unfortunately, many are putting quality family time on the back burner to take care of financial obligations.

Today, I took my son and two nephews out for fun. I had to decide what would capture the attention of a 15, 10 and 8 year old. I also wanted to work on a budget since I too count my pennies. No one said having fun had to be expensive. Besides the boys didn't care because they were able to get out the house AND spend time with me.

After much research I decided to take them bowling (the skating rink is closed on Mondays). It seems that on Mondays children are half price. Can you believe I rented shoes and indulged in two games for less than $2 each. Yes, $2 each. I strongly advice everyone to research fun things for the family to engage in for the summer that won't break the bank.

Tomorrow we are going to Brookfield Zoo in Illinois because this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are free. All I have to pay for is parking. An average admission is ~$24. Let's not forget souvenirs and snacks. That's a phenomenon savings.

For dinner I took them to Red Robin where the wait is nothing, the environment is smoke free and the dinner is cheap. I fed a family of four for less than $30.

This Money Monday was a penny saver. The best of all everyone had a great time. At the end of the day I came home with change. I'm loving it!

Log on to your city attractions, restaurants and fun events to regard what is free or discounted for the summer. You will be amazed with all you can do with the family on a feasible budget.

How you treat your employees can affect your bottom line.

I met with a potential client today to discuss our services. He was a great candidate for Strategic Management for Planning. The company was a small towing and garage service. He had employees who were loyal, but lacked the leadership qualities he desired.

There were times he didn't feel comfortable because no one was capable of running the busy without his presence.
He felt like a one man team:

He controls the administrative duties
He dictates how to service the vehicles
He communicates with all the customers
He markets for new busy and attempts to deepen current relationships
He promotes the sales of the the business

He is so consumed with being the boss and brand he doesn't know how to dictate accordingly to others. He's also doing a disservice to his business by not aggressively increasing profitability.

I couldn't help but notice when we were in our meeting (open quarters) his employees could hear every word. After hearing what I had to say, he liked that our company was capable of improving his business, building teamwork and enhancing employee benefits through loyalty of the organization. However, he began to discuss each employee's behavior with a negative tone.

The business owner stated that each employee lacked leadership because of personal issues. They didn't know how to leave their personal issues at home and continuously dumped their problems on his shoulders. He couldn't leave the building for hours at a time because they need someone to micromanage their every move.

Keep in mind the employees can hear him degrade their abilities and self worth.

If we decide to take this business as a client our consultants have plenty of work ahead of them. We must:

Start from the top (the boss needs a leadership makeover)
How you conduct yourself trickles down to the team
Put the right team in place
Coach skills accordingly to conduct self on and off the job
Train others to perform duties and be coachable so that the boss can lead

Tearing down the morale of his employees is drastically affecting his financial management. Employees should be able to feel good about their establishment and feel needed.

Business owners must realize that they own the company, but the employees are first line communicators and leaders to the customers.

If you can't speak respectfully and establish positive reinforcement your staff can't either.

I am the proudest wife and mother ever. I know there are others who would like to debate for the "proudest" title, but I'm claiming the belt today.

My family is the most important part of my life. As you can see the boys enjoy father/son moments all the time. More than often I am doubled teamed and forced to flex my super mom abilities.

Although we have been married 15 years it doesn't mean we don't enjoy having a "date night" every now and again. As always I'm the designated driver. One day I was thinking, what if I have more than usual? What about our only child? After many hours of discussion we decided to establish a trust and guardianship for the heir (son).

I tell you this story to say it's important to have the proper paperwork in order. This protects you and the loved ones left behind. Everyone is on board with our decision as to who would be his guardian.

This is a subject that no one wants to ever discuss, but I feel for the sake of your children it's extremely important.

There are many parents who don't want to ever have the talk. No, not the big talk with children. It's the talk about will, estate, trust and guardianship. Establish a safe financial net for your family.

Tomorrow is our anniversary!

Let me begin by saying I've been called cheap by many on numerous occasions. I would like to clarify and state, "I'm frugal". There is a difference.

Cheap is when you will only purchase inexpensive items and not consider the quality. Frugal is when you are mindful of the amount of money you spend and want to know you're getting the bang for the buck. Besides, I have splurged on an expensive item or two. Although, I have negotiated prices and cut the insurance on trips and neglect the warranty on items. That's neither here or there.

Again, tomorrow is our 15th anniversary. I am happy to be with the man who can tolerate my attitude, drive and tenacity. He allows me to be who I am and loves me unconditionally. I also love everything about him including the days when he doesn't want to be bothered and wishes he had a detached man room.

Well, I'm considering purchasing two items as a gift. He is a man who loves to top a crisp shirt with cuff links. I have found the perfect pair. Most importantly, it's 60% off the original price. I can't wait to see the look on his face. He of all people knows how frugal I am.

Besides, I recently surprised him with a trip for Las Vegas because he's so supportive and business is exceeding expectation.

I say all this to convey no matter the occasion you should always be mindful of how much you are spending and the quality of the product.

It rained the entire day, but my heart was filled with joy. In my eyes the sun was shining as bright as the innocent smile of a child seeing his father. The weather didn't damper my day as a matter of fact it improved.

I stayed in the house not alone...with family. Surrounded by love and infectious laughter. We had pancakes for breakfast, listened to music and danced for hours. Yes, we were silly for no reason except to enjoy each other's company.

My husband missed work today. I'm not telling his hidden agenda was to feel the unbroken connection with his wife and child. To feel the warmth of a hug when we passed in the hall. A smile that is so powerful it screams volumes.

It rained today...I'm happy.

I didn't know...

Well a close friend of mine called and stated I was not taking my friendship duties seriously. She expected me to inform her there is a tuition for kindergarten. She was aware of preschool, but not kindergarten.

"Isn't that part of the curriculum requirement?" I had no idea. Things have changed and times are hard, which is why they are putting more financial responsibility on the parents. I know preschool is optional, but kindergarten should not be part of your household budget process.

She indicated that husband and her were going to cut down on savings to pay for tuition for both children. One kindergarten and one preschool. Luckily they have the third child 2 years behind so they can take my suggestions to heart.

In case you're wondering. They started saving for college since the children were born. However, they were putting funds into a 529 Collegs Plan not knowing the possibilities of needing the funds sooner. In their case a Coverdell Education Savings Account would have been better.

Let's explain some differences:

529 College Saving Plan:

No taxes on capital gains
Will only be used for higher education
Anyone (tax bracket) can contribute
Invest in mutual funds
Min contribution $25 per plan and over $300K per beneficiary

Coverdell Education Savings Acct

Tax advantage
Can be used for any tuition, books and supplies from elem to higher education
Qualified tax payers with earned income max (married $220K, ind $110K) per yr.
Max contribution $2K yearly
Have to be used by 30 yrs old, if not, withdraw(w/penalties) or rollover into another family member Coverdell Savings Acct.

There are other features to each plan. I would suggest you contact a financial consultant for all the pertinent details.

In their case a Coverdell Education Savings Acct would have been in the best interest of the family. Now they have to cut contributions from savings and not take advantage of the investment features.

5 tips before purchasing a home

I know you may not want to hear this, but I have to say it. If you can afford to purchase a home....do it!

This is truly a buyer's market. Homeowners and banks are practically giving homes away. The market is down, economy is bad and companies are cutting.

You may ask so why should I buy a home during this economic turmoil? Simple, ownership. Owning a home gives you the freedom to build wealth. I'm not saying to go out and spend all your savings today. I am going to list 5 pertinent things to consider before pursuing your goal.

Check your credit score. Credit range from 300-850. A good score is 750+. I suggest for you to log on to truecredit. This will allow you to see your entire credit history and scores. The most important aspect of this site is that it lists ALL 3 bureaus: Transunion, Equifax and Experian. Remember, what is on one may not be on the other. You have to inquire to correct all three. The better the score the lower the interest rate.
Review your down payment. A great down payment is 10-20% of the purchase price of the house. Try to shoot for 20% to avoid the PMI. What is PMI? It is private mortgage insurance. It protects the lender not you in case of a loss of the property.
Don't spend more than you can handle. Consider your home expense ratio, which shouldn't be more than 28% of your monthly gross income. This includes mortgage, taxes and insurance. Don't forget daily living expenses which can fluctuate.
Location!Location!Location! Where are you consider purchasing a home? Although the home listed in the buyer's guide is in your price range you may want to take a look at the neighborhood. While searching for a home consider an area that has potential for growth. You don't want to invest in a deteriorating area that is desolate and unmarketable.
Research a broker. There are many to choose from as we all know. It's fine to "interview" each broker to make sure he/she has your best interest at heart. At times it's difficult to find someone who doesn't only look at dollar signs.

It's my birthday

Yes, I have survived another year on this beautiful earth. As I celebrate my birthday I have to reflect on the past year. It has been happy, joyful, sad, bitter and educational. I've have many gains and losses. There were limited losses although each hit me extremely hard. The gains will remain for a lifetime.

My family has been with me through thick and thin. In case my husband decides to read this post I want to say thank you. Thank you for allowing me to be the expressive person I am. Thank you for loving me unconditionally(I have taken him through many loopholes). Thank you for your support. My son thinks his mom is the best person to ever grace this earth. I wonder will he still think that once he becomes a teenager and I won't allow him to drive my vehicle.

My career has taken me in a path I never would have imagined. It wasn't in my plans to have a consultant firm with a great team this early in my life. I knew it wasn't going to happen for another 5-10 years. Who am I to try to change the course of my life? My life's journey was already mapped out without my knowledge.

At times it's hard to consider someone a true friend. I am glad to say that I have been blessed with two girlfriends who would drop everything to make sure we continue to have that circle of friendship, love and admiration. When you mess with one, you mess with all.

After working with numerous individuals and couples, I have declared three categories?

I typically don't like to put people in a box as it irritates when someone does me the same way. However, this gives you a clear understanding.

Keeping up with the Jones

People live outside their means and adopt the “by any means necessary” attitude. They value material items more than retirement plans, individual stocks and real estate. Most lack self control of their spending habits and thrive on looking like the “it” woman or man. They would do anything to be the center of attention and long for others to want to emulate their style.

A means to no end

These individuals work to spend money. Their paychecks are recklessly depleted on items but the monthly bills are barely met. Most realize they have a predicament with emotional spending. However, they desire to live outside the household budget. Once spending is realized and controlled, they have the opportunity to save, budget, and manage finances.

Limited functional well being

They are contemplating bankruptcy as a way out of their dilemma. They have splurged on items with credit and loans. They display lack of financial education about what it means to establish and maintain good credit. Unfortunately, they don’t have the desire to keep up with the Jones. Instead, they are attempting to keep up with the minimum to survive from the collection calls. Having lack of funds is indicative of displaying poor money management skills. Bankruptcy seems to be the only way out. However, with firm discipline, negotiation and consultation there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

What life lessons do you have?

I have heard throughout my life that if you pray hard for something it will come true. Well, I'm hear to tell you that God take care of Fools and Babies. I'm neither one so in addition to praying I must take action of my goals.

Nothing happens overnight, but with diligence it will happen. Think about where you were two years ago. Now think about how you ended in the place you are today.

I had a plan to be in Corporate America another five to ten years and build a list of names, experiences and contacts. Due to unforeseen events it didn't quite happen that way. See my plans weren't really written by me. They were already created before I was born. I just thought I had everything in control.

It happens that in spite of my hesitant behavior I started my company sooner than expected. I also become an author, speaker and soon filmmaker.

Life can never be predicted. It's up to you to be ready when it adjusts.

It's here once again. The topic about money, decisions and future goals.

The government is currently attempting to fix what they can during the recession. One thing that is more complicated to fix is Social Security and Medicare.

It seems that since the recession the government is running short of funds to accommodate the baby boomers and current recipients. Yes ladies and gentleman retirement may one day be privatized. What does that mean to you? Well it means for those of you who were depending solely on Social Security and Medicare will have to look for other means for support. It's never too late to begin your retirement future.

During retirement it is estimated that a person is expected to live on 80% of current income. That means that you won't have as much, if not any, debt. Your monthly expense will consists of utilities, food,occasional travel and possibly prescriptions.

Here are some suggestions to take control of your retirement life:

Consult with a financial expert as soon as possible
Open an IRA (individual retirement account)
Open an annuity that will provide you with flexible payment options.
Exercise daily to have a healthy life and alleviate need for prescription drugs
Pay off as much debt today to live comfortable tomorrow
Consider a reverse mortgage

This dilemma will be fixed later than sooner. However, taking control of your retirement should be addressed sooner than later. It's imperative you take the proper steps so that you aren't semi-retired and able to enjoy your golden years.

credit card fairy...

So many credit cards and not enough time...

What does the new credit card law really mean to you?

Well, let me tell you what it means to me. It means that my credit score isn't affected by the decisions on the banks and companies.

My card is what?

My husband and I were going on a trip. We decided the existing camera was outdated and the camcorder doesn't always fit out purpose. We went into Best Buy to "browse". After my husband found the camera that spoke to him we decided to purchase.

We went to the checkout line to purchase the item. As my husband was pulling out cash I stopped him and reminded of the store card that hasn't been used in over 1 yr.

The clerk stated it was closed due to lack of activity for more than a year.

Closed!!!!

How dare someone make that decision for us. We were extremely upset for many reasons. Let me tell you how your credit score is indicated.

Types of credit used

Imagine you owned three credit cards that were opened 5 yrs apart. The very first one is closed without your knowing. You have now eliminated 5 yrs of spotless credit history. #1 & #3 are affected based on someone else decision.

Luckily for the company our credit score was not affected, but it would have been nice to have the Best Buy credit card in case I wanted to use in the future at my leisure.

What I mean by hidden misconceptions is your inability to believe you are capable of fulfilling your dreams. Let's begin with the current recession state. Many have programmed their minds to submit to the definition of recession.

Recession is described as a slowdown in economic activity.

Why are you allowing others to describe your financial abilities? This is a great opportunity to go out and become an entrepreneur. I am not condoning you to quit your current state of employment before you have your ducks in order. I am, however, encouraging you to dismiss your hidden misconceptions. The misconceptions that:

you aren't capable of owning your own company
you aren't able to be financially stable w/ guidance
you aren't worthy of living your dreams

Today is the day. Establish a strategic plan for yourself.

Success is great when you are able to identify what you didn't know existed within yourself.

I was listening to an"author" this morning. He indicated he is an entrepreneur not an author because he believes what he writes and not just report. He also indicated that he doesn't believe in financial magazines because they teach society entirely wrong.

In case you're wondering he has a successful financial book that guides you how to be rich.

He doesn't have a financial background
He boasts about his inability to write
He indicates he only wanted to tell a story

This entrepreneur says that living below your means is a misinformed concept that most financial experts try to embed in their audience.

I coach people to live within your means. To live within your means is to:

set a budget
not exceed your budget
enjoy your daily life while being conscious of your spending habits
have a leisure spending account that won't interfere with your household finances

To live below your means is to:

deprive yourself of your needs
become oblivious to your financial goals
inability to properly take care of household finances

As you see there is a huge difference between the two. Educating yourself will allow you to have a successful financial ability to move forward.

I hear people complain, but they haven't changed how they manage their money. The only way for you to get out of your financial rut is to take responsibility of your spending and change your behavior.

5 Steps to financial relief

Cut out the morning Cafe de latte
Discontinue the daily newspaper (we are able to read articles via internet)
Take a sack lunch to work
Stop the gym membership (your home is a great obstacle)
Save gas by walking to work or carpool

Of course there are many ways to save a dime or two, which will be discussed at a later time. But today it's about taking baby steps.

The money saved from the financial relief can be added to a monthly bill to lower your finances and get you out of debt sooner.

These are the things that truly matter. Nowadays I find myself extremely busy. It's a great feeling. I remember years ago praying to be in the professional and financial place I'm in today. Since there isn't enough time in the day I have to plan virtually everything.

It's a behavior that my husband has grown to love.

Today I am spending time with my two best friends. We try to occasionally have a weekend wives getaway, but this time of year isn't working. One of the friends is currently pregnant and can't get away from the family. It's fine so we choose a Saturday to have lunch, gossip and rejoice in our friendship.

It's healthy to surround yourself with a group of friends who genuinely love and respect you. As I continue on my life's journey I am pleased to know that outside my family I have two very good friends I can call my sisters.

personal challenges

Have you ever been awake at 4am surfing the stations and wondering why your life is in its current state?

I know that may have sounded like an infomercial question, but it is an important question. I have learned from clients that when people are awake during that time of morning they are questioning their abilities.

I personally use that time to get in tune with myself and gather my thoughts. No one is awake and I can 'breath' and think freely.

I've also learned that your personal challenges are from your self doubt and not the doubt of others.

I am a big sports fanatic and I am really enjoying the basketball playoffs. I can't help but to admire the Boston Celtics. Many commentators and fans believed they wouldn't make it this far because one of the key players [Kevin Garnet] is out due to an injury. Lord and behold they are in the 7th game of the semi-finals.

The team didn't use the personal challenge of an important teammate as an excuse for not giving their all. They learned to overcome all obstacles together and put forth the energy. Every block, pass and rebound were performed without any hesitation.

That's how we all should handle life.

Although we may not be able to visualize the big picture it's our responsibility to attempt to obtain all intangibles.

I've heard these questions and more many times. Some of them have come from myself one time or another. Remember, you are not alone (literally).

When you've encountered hope AND dispair the situation comes into play at the least moment.

When one door closes another one opens.

Keep in mind that you aren't the only person to have ever gone through things. At times, someone else situation is worse than yours. I have to remind myself that I am truly BLESSED to have accomplished so much in the time I have graced this earth. I can honestly say that I am leaving a legacy behind.

Yes, I did it. I have to confess. I went shopping yesterday. I haven't splurged in a long time and it was time to take advantage of the sales and update my wardrobe. A girl has to have more than black suits. Who says a driven women has to think AND dress like a man.

You will be happy to know after all the damage I saved over $400. The ideal strategy is to take the difference saved and deposit into a high interest bearing savings account. Therefore, your saved dollars can truly earn potential for you.

In case you're wondering, I paid for everything cash. I normally use my cash rewards credit card, but this time was different. Lately, time slips away and I notice the automatic (minimum) pymt debit from acct. Now I have finance charge on the balance. I don't like giving away money.

The nerve of some people

As I was checking out I was asked the famous question: What is your phone number? "It's unlisted!" I don't like the enticing coupons coming to the house to make me shop even more to think I'm getting a deal. A true deal is saving your money. The salesperson ended by asking me to help her out and complete a credit card application. Help her out! Won't I be helping out the economy and disregarding my household finances? I then asked her to help me out with finance charges. Will you pay my APR and annual fee? Her reply was "we don't have an annual fee".

I suppose she's doing what she's taught. Well I'm teaching each of you to just say NO. Haven't we learned from this economic chaos.

We all can play

During his candidacy, Pres Bush signed a bill that effects each credit card. It seems when you're late and the interest increases on one ALL are affected. Please don't forget this critical law that can affect each card you have. Again, it's extremely important to manage your finances.

Many of you wonder what it consist of and others believe you can get through business without it. Well, I'm here to say that you need to have a firm, precise, detailed plan in your life to be successful.

“What should you pay attention to for the next six months?”

Two quarters of the fiscal year has already passed. As a business owner, you are strategically looking at every detail and wondering how you can increase the bottom line. For some the year began very prosperous, for others there’s need for improvement.

What were your mistakes?

Many times we know what works and aren’t willing to change. This is the number one faux pas many engage when not acknowledging service changes with needs. As important, as it may seem you need a plan to strategize the remainder year. Company success relies on developing a plan and sticking to it over the long term. Reflect on your previous years to move forward with your business.
*Create a detail plan that addresses your vision and goals.
*Prioritize your financial needs.
*Build a competitive advantage amongst your peers.
*Communicate your strategy to staff.
*Inspect and modify your plan as needed.

Again, it’s extremely important to adjust your plans to accommodate the service of your clients.

Are your employees knowledgeable about the products?

What are you giving your customer that’s unique to the market?

With so much uncertainty in the economy, you want your clients to feel the strength in your company.

Before I discussed the strategy of investing in a fund without losing your principal (Annuity). For those of you who have 10+ years (long term) to play in the market you may want to consider purchasing funds while they are "on sale". However, there are rules.

This is a great opportunity to purchase a home and buy stocks

Consider the market is on sale. Homeowners are desperate to sell, which means the ball is in your court. Negotiation! Negotiation! It's also a prime opportunity to refi your home for a lower rate and reserve your equity. I suggest not to include the equity in your refi. Only refinance your existing balance. Don't take out the equity! Remember, it's establishing too much credit and not enough collateral that got us into this economic situation to begin. Feel comfortable and safe knowing that you have equity established and you are managing your household wisely.

This is a pertinent question. The answer to this question is why the economy is in its current state. Too many of us (individuals & businesses) eyes were bigger than its pockets.

Credit is great when it isn't abused...

Can you remember a time when you went to a department store to purchase a "needed" item? The clerk stated her sales script..."you can save 10% today when you open a credit card". Your reply without any hesitation Yes. Think about this. You saved 10% today. What if you didn't pay off the total balance although you could've with the cash in your pocket? That 10% discount item is now increased due to: APR and Annual Fee. Can you see where I'm going with this?

Yes, he said it. The guru of the financial world. If you watch the session further it will indicate within the next three years. Please understand that with anything it takes patience. Our economic crisis didn't happen overnight and we won't be able to dig ourselves out overnight.

No matter what your reasons are or were you have them. Today, I participated in a Bridal Extravaganza. It was beautiful to see the glowing [pre] brides and lost [pre] grooms. They were happy to engage in the bliss and fashion show with all the beautiful gowns.

When I stepped up to speak to everyone a silent room was filled with...hmmm. No one considered when you marry so does everything, including finances. These happy, young couples needed a little education when it came to financial discussion. Although, I love my business it amazes me to hear no one ever touch upon finances.

How do you define yourself

I am almost positive that everyone knows someone who tries to keep up with the Jones. Let’s look at Jennifer who clearly lives outside her means. On the outside, she has a beautiful home, new Mercedes Benz, and a wardrobe to match her attitude. She makes an annual income of $95,000.00. However, her disposable income is limited and an emergency fund consists of a phone call to her parents for another loan that would never be paid back.oHo No one knows her struggles of portraying to others a woman of statute with expensive jewelry, large square footage home, and a foreign vehicle equipped with everything. As previously mentioned she asks her parents for small loans that are withdrawn from their retirement fund. She is also no stranger to credit cards. Although most are maxed out, she manages to open more to live the lifestyle she portrays.
Jennifer has come to a point in her life that she can’t suffer any longer. She admits her debt excluding mortgage comes to $300,000.00. Her credit cards used from purchasing food to exotic trips to Africa and Europe.

Jennifer clearly has a problem with debt. Her dilemma with finances and having a sense to want to belong started as far back as her teen years. I asked Jennifer as far back she could remember to describe an incident trying to keep up with someone outside her means. She smiled and stated, “high school”. High school is a time when most of us are confused about where we should belong. There are groups from popular, jocks, nerds, outcasts, etc. Jennifer wanted to be a popular girl, but didn’t initially look the part. She recalls begging her parents to shop at the designer stores and paying for spring break trips.
I decided to have Jennifer start with taking care of herself, realizing who she truly is, accept it, and then tackle her debt. She was hesitant because she presented a façade for so long. Everyone who knew her categorized her as the “it” girl. No one realized the pain and loneliness she had. Jennifer let the materials define who she was when in fact she was a carefree woman with goals and ambitions. Her goal was to actually love herself and enjoy life as well as defining her level of success. While having the discussion with me she admittedly cried about dying with debt and having nothing worthwhile to show for all her hard work.

Steps needing to take in order to address the issues:
1. Admit to identifying one based on others’ perception.
2. Define who you are and embrace it.
3. Identify all your debt to begin elimination.
4. Start eliminating the high interest credit cards first.
5. Decide what could be eliminated from a daily routine and put the cash away in an emergency fund.

Take the positive road:

When was the last time or even the first you sat down with your spouse or significant other to disclose your financial information and goals. Too many of you are Financially Divorce. You know share the same bed, but no financial ties.

It's time for a full disclosure consultation. I beg you to get your annual financial checkup with your spouse. I have been meeting with pre-marital couples and professed the importance of the unity of items, beliefs and finances. It's extremely important to discuss your finances before and during marriage. It's a horrible feeling to find out your spouse has horrible credit.

Every time I see a particular commercial on television with the guy singing about his wife and her credit it's amazing. He had goals of owning a home, car and full employment. However, she didn't disclosed her credit background and they are staying in her parents' basement.

Just think...you had to claim this exact funds as income. Did you allow the check to WORK for you!

In 2008, President Bush disbursed an economic stimulus check to do just as Congress and he wanted…to stimulate the economy. The main purpose of the funds was to get the economy out of a spiral recession with hopes of migrating away from potential depression. This wasn’t the first time an economic stimulus check was disbursed. As I recall everyone who qualified received one in 2001. The goal was achieved and most individuals put the funds from the check back into the economy just as the administration calculated. Depression, sadness, fear, joy, happiness, and excitement are feelings that are linked to finances. I believe once we obtain and understand the education of finance along with taking care of oneself our dollars will go much further than expected. Let’s take an economic stimulus check of $1200 for a married couple. The monies can be spent in numerous ways such as vacationing, purchase of a leather sofa, or a well deserved shopping spree. Too many people young, old, single, married, with or without children are spending money they don’t have on frivolous items. Once we understand the process of emotional spending that same $1200 can be invested and work much harder for the same married couple instead of having nothing to show for a boost in income that is unaccountable.

Ex: Married Couple 35 yrs of age
Retirement age: 65 yrs old
Years spend in retirement: 20 yrs
Money set aside for retirement: $1200
Aggressive % for investing: 11% *
Moderate % during retirement: 7% *

The couple would need $1,003,585 by the time of retirement. The $1200 would accumulate to $27,471 in 30years if invested. What a difference…

How are your finances doing in regards to the economic concern that's questioning everyone's future?
Is it possible to live within my means?

Absolutely! One day I was eating lunch with family. I overheard a conversation because the restaurant is a cozy setting. The group of friends was deciding to go Dutch and one person disclosed he didn’t have much cash. However, he ordered the most from the menu. When the bill arrived, he pulled out a credit card, smiled and said, “go big or go home”.
When you carefully monitor what accessible cash you have on hand, it is possible to live within your means. We have become a credit society. I am not opposing to establishing credit; it’s maintaining that we overlook.

To survive within your means there are essentials for finances are linked to emotions:

Set a budget:
Establishing a budget for whatever your needs is essential when living within your means. I was watching a show on Bravo TV and heard someone indicate she didn’t have a budget. The spending was ridiculous! If you have it to spare of course “treat yourself”. However, even the wealthiest have lost millions. The worst thing anyone can do is continuously spend without regard to what you actually have. The well informed spender is prepared and looks at the tag for cost.

Set goals
Set a goal! Set a goal! Regardless of short term or long term goals allow you to stay on path. The first thing I ask a client during a consultation is what you like to accomplish and in what timeframe. A well written plan is indicative of staying within a budget as well as paying off bills expeditiously. I believe goals should also be established outside a financial setting.

Identify spending triggers
Take a moment to reflect what triggers you to spend money. Is it loneliness? Is it wanting to be the first to wear an original? Is it happiness? Identifying what your triggers are will allow you to address your spending habits. When I meet with various clients I notice a correlation between an emotion and outlandish spending. Take a moment to write down precipitating events before going on a shopping spree.

Surround self with supporters
Surrounding yourself with individuals that have a common goal is essential to living within your means. As with any relationship people have to have the same values in order to have a successful relationship. When you verbally disclose what your intentions are with your group of friends it is beneficial for everyone to respect and implement.

Educate about finances
Reading is fun as well as fundamental. You can never subscribe to or read too many books about financial education. I recommend everyone begin by journaling daily about your spending habits and the various emotions you possibly identify when triggered. The world is consumed with an abundance of information that is easily accessible. The internet is a beginning to acquiring documentation that is less economical or free.

Set boundaries
The boundaries are set with you when a budget is established. However, this particular boundary is recognized for others who plead for monies and request for loans. As I have coached clients in the past to look into the mirror and practice saying, “No”! Recently, a mother came into the office distressed the nearly six figure savings has depleted to less than $3000.00. She hadn’t realized that she was spending that much money on others. She disclosed her only son who is an engineer lost his job. He is married with two children. The wife is a homemaker who has no desire to change her job title. I encouraged her to cut the cord and persuade him to find employment any if it involved relocating. She is the typical parent who put others’ needs before hers. It’s time to say No or you’ll financially spiral downward.

Love self
Although, each essential listed is highly recommended for achievement. Loving yourself is going to be indicative to a successful plan. Put your needs first and identify what truly makes you happy. Self is key to the cognitive representation of one’s identity. In order to progress in personal management it’s imperative to acknowledge one’s shortcomings and establish realistic future goals.

Implementing these steps is imperative to living within your means and establishing wealth for yourself. Remember, anyone is capable of getting out of debt. It’s identifying the cause that is affecting the continuous behavior. Before acknowledging, the fundamental steps to living within a budget address the debt. It is essential to know where you stand in your financial dilemma. Be aware of your total balances, payments and rates.

What is your passion? This is a simple, yet powerful question. However, some have not realized what makes them happy. Learning what keeps you going will lead your desires.

I have been fortunate to leave the corporate world, which included long hours and lack of appreciation for a meaningful life. I have a career. Not compared to what I previous engaged in daily. See, that was work. This is my passion. Work isn't work when you are passionate about what you do.

I have met many people (physically, web, twitter, blog, etc) that I would not have ever encountered in my previous world. I am Blessed to be able to also have others genuinely want to see me progress in life.

I look forward to where my destination will lead me. I am up for the challenges, highs, and lows.

I am truly happy that I stepped out on faith to fulfill my dreams. I hope you can do the same in whatever it is. Never let others impression of you dictate who you are and what you are capable of doing.

Expectations

As with anything you receive what you put into it. Many of us want to receive their wishes and goals today. Not realizing that you have to nurture and put dedication into what is expected. I like to call these individuals...microwave babies.

The terminology came from the instant expectation that you are suppose to receive what you want on demand. Life doesn't happen that way. You have to be sure that you will receive every curve ball imaginable to regard how to handle dilemmas.

I have noticed when baseball players are thrown a curve ball, swing, and miss. They adjust themselves and walk back toward the plate. That's what you have to do with life. Go forwarding adjusting yourselves as needed. But rest assure you will eventually hit that home run.

Expect to have a good day when you deliver positive, healthy thoughts. Your day including life is what you not only expect it to be, but realize that you have the power to adjust and deliver.

Let me say that I am officially hooked! I get to "tweet" about the in between moments of my day and keep you posted about the events of my career. I can see why this is spreading like wildfire.

We waited until the eleventh hour to file our taxes. Each year we say we won't wait so late then time slips by. I began to wonder what are others doing with their overage tax refund. Please, I beg you don't be a thousandaire. The few thousand dollars you receive today will be gone tomorrow if you don't think about how to make it last. Invest your money into something financially tangible with growth that you can file the next year and hopefully continue.

These are a few ideas to plant your financial seeds:

IRA (Investment Retirement Account)
Spousal IRA
529 College Fund

Each one of these accounts can get you an additional tax benefit. We are all wondering where can we donate to get an extra tax credit. Why not donate toward yourselves?

Don't be afraid to invest. I truly believe that it is a great opportunity to buy a stock or two. I like to think the equity (stock) is "on sale". Let's assume you were shopping at Macy and found a pair of jeans for $60. You saved for a week, returned to find it is now on sale for $30. You can afford to purchase TWO. You then purchase two pair of jeans without trying them on. Three weeks later you try on the jeans...they don't fit. It's okay, although you no longer have the receipt, the tags remain. You return the jeans to the store for credit, but it must be offered at the current price. They are now FULL PRICE! Yeah, your sale item purchased at $30 e. is now $60 e. You've just made a profit of $60. Now that is the stock market today.

Think twice what you do with your tax return. Your decision can allow you to see a recurring return!

These simple words mean so much at the most difficult times. I recently contracted with a company that I had to discontinue services. The company was great. It was the upper management that didn't appreciate its employees.

Everyday was a beating session. Why can't you...?

I began to think about the morale of the company, employees, and environment. As an entrepreneur I have the luxury of setting my own hours, expectations, and limits. Enough was enough! I was there to change the company for the better. However, I didn't feel comfortable working in the environment.

How can I be proud of my work when no one is actually implementing what was taught? I truly didn't feel comfortable continuing putting my name on the contracts.

What are your financial goals?

People focus so much on self improvement that they neglect their financial situations. Do you realize that your financial well being is included in self improvement?

Let's take Anita:

Anita who likes to spend and lives by the motto “sometimes you got to treat yourself”. One day I privately met with Anita to discuss her thought process about finances.

The first step to address with Anita is the lack of taking care of oneself (self-reliance). Anita must begin by taking off the layers of clothing she shields herself with the designer suits. True respect is self-respect. Learn to love who are and what you represent and others will follow.
I agreed with her that no one sees what she has established in an emergency fund or retirement plan, but that should be the least of her concerns. Knowing and accepting who you are is preservation of the soul. She is a prime candidate of lack of self-reliance, emotional spending, and lack of budgeting.

For each of you please consider meeting with a knowledgeable, professional consultant. Make sure you focus on your financial goals (short and long term). When choosing a consultant make sure you he/she is as adamant about your financial well being as you are. Lastly, follow up with each task to make sure it is well executed. In the end, your hard work will pay off...literally.

Have you ever been so overwhelmed with a task that you couldn't figure out how to execute the project? Well, that's life!!! I have found that we are so worried about how to complete a project to move on to the next we aren't able to grasp the concept as well as enjoy the movements.

Sometimes it takes someone else to intervene to make you realize that you are putting too much thought into something. Life is simple, people make it hard.

Take into consideration these simple questions?

What does your life consist of daily?
What are your goals?
Are you able to fulfill your dreams?
Can you afford (monetary and emotional) to stop dreaming and face reality?

I enjoy watching the growth of a child. He or she isn't bothered by the outcome of the task. The child continues to try until he/she gets it right. As adults it's time to accept the concept of life. Realize that you not only make it how you want, but life is simple. You are the creator of your own game board.

Nothing Ventured; Nothing Gain

I can't afford to.....

I think we can all fill in the blank. There have been too many occasions when someone has expressed fulfilling a goal to never start on the task. Do you realize that if you never attempt you will never know if you are capable?

I love what I do. I meet and network with many people. I discuss financial empowerment and self reliance. More than often by the time I sit with a person he/she self esteem and confidence is ripped apart. It's my job to rebuild, sculpt, and present all the possibilities.

There was a client who wanted to start a nonprofit organization. She wanted to help abused women, but didn't think she was capable because of lack of finances and resources. After hearing her vision I knew she had a passion for what she wanted.

It was a task, but I eventually (3 mths) got her to realize she was worthy of pursuing her dreams. She followed my plans to take care of herself. The finances soon followed because she no longer doubted her capabilities.

Who knows where she would currently be if she had not taken a leap of faith?

You won't know your abilities if you don't try!

Historically, the stock market has led the economy by an average of six months at major turning points. Typically during recessions, the market will turn and rally and, six months later, the economy will shift from negative to positive Gross Domestic Product (GDP). I think the stock market is drifting these days because investors are not convinced the recession will turn anytime within the next six months. When investors believe the bottom and subsequent positive GDP is six months out, the market will rally.

As I have mentioned in the past, investors are acting based on their emotions. When you realize that you control the economy? Not your fears or what Congress and CEOs dictate the margin to be. Part of the investor skepticism centers around the Economic Stimulus Package and the surrounding debate over whether it will jump start the economy.

I am positive each of us have been affected by the decisions of the Government and how the funds will be dictated. However, you can lead your household to believe that we will come together an prevail as society has done in the past.

I do not believe today's economic and financial problems are as dire as those in the 1930s. Nonetheless, I am optimistic the stock market will eventually respond favorably to government intervention today, just as it did under FDR's (Frederick D. Roosevelt) New Deal.

You never know who is watching your every move. I have found that others are either waiting for that special moment of breakthrough or failure. Fortunately, more are waiting for the breakthrough. I am pleased to encounter others who are inspired by my words. Whether in presentations or print.

Again, I can't express enough the importance of defining self by your standards and not others. When you walk through the door all eyes should be on you from the confidence you display. Remember not to mask your weakness in fear of others knowing your incapability. If you come across the right individual he or she may shed wisdom on your situation to assist in strengthening.

When you are passionate about your work everyone knows. I have been networking like crazy and meeting many individuals I thought were out of my reach. It seems no matter the fame and fortune we all need someone to inspire us and educate on financial empowerment and personal management.

If any of you are contemplating on a new task...do it. As the old saying goes "nothing beats a failure, but a try". This is extremely true. How can we teach the next generation to go for their dreams when we can't get off the couch? Challenge yourself! You would be amazed at how many people are following.

Happy Friday...we made it!

This has been a looong week. I have been through many highs and lows. I must say the lows definitely allowed me to appreciate the high moments.

My lowest point this week was realizing the lack of support and happiness I felt from others. I am not the type of individual that want others opinion of what I am doing, but who doesn't appreciate an admiration or two.

I shared a networking [high] moment with quite a few individuals. Some were genuinely happy and others were blinded by the jealousy of being successful. I strongly believe that we are all capable of having success [whatever you define it to be].

I realize that I can't [emotionally] support everyone. As I continue through my journey in life I will definitely see who are my true friends and support group.

Never stop your dreams because others can't wake up to reality!

I believe the children are our future

Yesterday, I spoke with a group of inspiring young pre-professionals. They were seniors in high school. I try to give back as well as mold the young impressionable minds before the 'real world' catches them.

It was refreshing to hear the questions about finances and empowerment. These weren't the average young boy chasing girls. These young ladies had a plan and wanted to know how to implement it. I couldn't help but to mention the 'Superman Syndrome'. They all related to Clark Kent and how no one knew of his capabilities. They were all in agreement that they have abilities that no one else know. However, they believed in themselves and conquered all their goals through those abilities.

Empowerment doesn't begin during adulthood. It's pertinent that we have a responsibility to our future doctors, lawyers, presidents, teachers, etc. Time, patience and guidance doesn't cost a thing. In the end everyone benefits.

Charity not only starts at home, but it continues with education.

Don't want it so bad you overlook the reality

Too many times we make up what is not seen to endure what we desire. I always discuss following your dreams and living up to your potential. However, I don't want anyone to dig a hole no one can crawl out.

What does that suppose to mean?

Circumstances happen in due time. Each of us are involved in a plan that is controlled by a force outside ourselves. We can assist by putting forth effort and not being stagnant in our goals.

I was listening to the radio early this morning. There was a lady who accepted the harsh treatment of her husband. It seemed she wanted and loved the idea of being a new bride she accepted his negative behavior.

Again, treat yourself how you want and others will follow. Allowing yourself to be victimized in anyway is detrimental for all.

Before moving forward with any plan research the possibilities. Believe me when I say your dreams will come true in due time. When it does...HOLD ON!

How can others see your potential and personality when you can't see it yourself? Think of some words to describe yourself. Although it is very important try not to use wife, husband, mother, father, sister, or brother. Use adjectives to describe yourself.

What are your words?

Strategic, smart, innovative, entrepreneurial, intelligent, brilliant, stubborn, etc. These are characteristics that describe your personality. These important words not only tell a story about yourself, but your capabilities as well.

What are your goals? Are the obtainable?

"Yes, we can!" These were the words the U.S.A. heard for nearly two years. These words resonate in each of us. We are capable of accomplishing any goal we may have. However, it is important that we are likable along the way.

Many deals are executed because of the relationship built with that person. Not necessarily the product. It is the person's responsibility to win over individuals they come across. Think of yourself as the brand of your 'company'. When an audience believe in your brand, they believe in you.

How others feel about you begins with how you feel about yourself. Believe that you are likable and good things will follow.

How many of you have heard this....

I don't like my job
I have gained weight over the years
I am stressed
I wish I could start my own business
I want to publish a book
I feel helpless
I want to travel more
I want to spend more time with the family

Stop whining and do something about it. I speak from experience when I say the time is NOW! This could not be a better time to accomplish your goals and do something about fulfilling your dreams. I remember punching a clock and working 60+ hours weekly. No family, No fun, No life. I was controlled by corporate society. After many restless nights, deprived quality family time, and migraines accompanied with chest pain I quit. Yes, it was time for me to change the situation I didn't like. Am I saying to walk out of your job tomorrow? Definitely not. But after lining up my options and making some deals I was able to work as an independent contractor through my consulting firm. Yes, I have a different kind of stress, but working for myself is worth it.

To change comes from within. It begins with a silent prayer and implemented through actions.

Always perform as though your life depended on it. What do you mean? Well, think about a time when someone critiqued your job performance. Can you recollect the project? Can you honestly say you gave 100% effort? Not only are first impressions lasting impressions, but how you perform is forever embedded in others' minds. When you realize that you have given your all in a situation you feel good about yourself.

I believe that it's okay to fail. No one is perfect. It's how you handle the situation and your outlook that matters. When you fail in whatever...career, game, marriage, or goals it's not the end of the world. Reevaluate your steps and keep striving.

Have you ever met someone that was so angry for no reason it made you second think yourself? Well, I have! I am sure today was a full moon somewhere on earth. I have found myself pondering about the dilemmas and concerns in that person's life.

It takes more energy to be grumpy than to be happy. Why exert so much energy and negative at that? In light of approaching the second quarter I am wondering if people are still committing to their resolutions. You know the I want to stop smoking...I will save more money...I want to lose weight...I will be on time...I will be kind and go green.

Today is the day to recommit to happiness:

Smile (it uses less facial muscles)
Be kind to someone for no reason
Say thank you
Don't steal the last parking space
Meditate or Pray each day
Realize to have something is better than nothing
Accept your flaws
Accept yourself!

To accept peace within yourself is to accept eternal happiness. Spread your joy through internal radiance. Doesn't that feel much lighter?

One of the most beautiful things in life is to be in constant motion. I am not talking about physical, although, exercising is vital to your health. The beautiful motion is mental and verbal.

Why are your minds stagnant?

It's time to explore your life in regards to options and be creative with yourself. Again, not letting others dictate your well being, your destiny, and how you deliver your thoughts. Recently, I received three business proposals. I am confident it's because I challenged myself to deliver my beliefs and goals about Shabazz Management Group to others.

Speak with eloquence and everyone listens.

Today, I participated in the local cable network taping. I must say the proudest moment was when I came home to share the non edit version with my son. He looked at me with eyes of admiration and gave me a hug. The host, Dr. Howard, was very pleased with the interview. I was asked to revisit. I believe this is the beginning to a beautiful television interview relationship. I can't be stopped now...on to Oprah!

Money Management was the topic that was discussed along with the synopsis of Stillwaters. The discussion entailed everyone having Stillwaters and knowing how to reveal the hero within yourself. Success starts from within by your own standards during your own calculated time. I can't express enough the joy I feel from being successful by my own definition.

The time has come for each of you to release your hero and find your Stillwaters. I am positive you will love your inner beauty as you discover what your capabilities are.

I'm a Survivor

Have you survived something you didn't think you could? We all have been in a situation when we were at our last hope. However, going through the storm made you stronger. Not giving up and working harder allows you to survive any situation.

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." I truly believe in this quote, however, you have to be open to the situation. Listen to the signs and watch the movements. Every living thing has movement. If you put breath into a negative situation it too has movement because you have allowed it to consume your life. Therefore, it is a living thing. You breath, eat, and sleep the problem.

Stop giving life the negative situations. Declare survivorship!

Resistant to change

I was extremely surprised to hear comments from an Attorney

I met with an attorney today. He was interested in my consultant firm, published books, and speaking engagements. As from most people I am asked about my credentials. I expect the questions because some say I look all but twenty five years old. Heah, that's a compliment I will gladly accept. I moisturize daily!

For the sake of privacy I will not give his name. However, I must say that he has been practicing for over two scores and is a prominent figure in the community. He began to ask questions about Emotional Spending and Finding your Stillwaters. I speak on these two topics frequently as well as other subjects.

He believes that women aren't as good as men. He didn't believe in the women's movement or other historical events. I listened to what he had to say then I commented and gave my opinion.

Why would you limit your possibilities based on others' perception?

Think about this question. This country would not have many leaders and inventors if we all believed that you can't accomplish a particular goal.

If you aren't resistant to change, does that mean you can't change yourself? Will you ever be able to progress in life or will you be stagnant because you can't see yourself pass what other's expect?

I refuse to limit my possibilities because other's are resistant to change. I expect for you to do the same. In my world I can accomplish any and everything a man can. My goals are without limits and obtainable.

Never let your possibilities be limited because others can't see passed the stained mirrors. I am sure once they are able to see the [wo]man in the mirror they will notice how inadequate their behaviors are due to defining self from others!
